Chiva-Som's Mangrove Restoration Project

Award-winning beachfront resort and spa Chiva-Som has begun the process to preserve the delicate mangrove ecosystem in Hua Hin, Thailand. Since becoming “steward” of the mangrove in 2007, Chiva-Som has helped to plant over 2,000 trees for reforestation, cleared rubbish from the area and led rehabilitation projects, which has improved municipal wastewater quality. The team has also created a Junior Ambassadors programme, in which students gain first-hand knowledge of mangrove ecosystems and environmental issues. The students specifically learn about climate change and environmental degradation, while gaining respect for nature.

Chiva-Som has collaborated with local scientists and academics from Silpakorn University to create the first ‘green’ ecotourism education centre in the region, named ‘Krailart Niwate’ or The Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation & Science Education Centre. The structure, designed by the Silpakorn University Faculty of Architecture, is carbon neutral and will serve as a leading example of sustainable design and construction. The Science Education Centre will invite students to promote science learning at a young edge and will be open to the general public in 2017.
