Five Minutes With Rikke Horlykke
Rikke Horlykke is a former professional handball player (she won Champions League gold with her club and Olympic gold with the Danish national team in 2004 in Athens among others). Today after giving up a promising advertising career she utilises her background from professional sports as a personal trainer, coach and CrossFit instructor at the award winning wellness resort Kurhotel Skodsborg. We recently sat down with her to discuss all things fitness.
Who is your typical client?
It became clear to me early on that I would not be able to work wonders for people who are 30kgs overweight and who basically come to a personal trainer for a shoulder to lean on. My clients buy into my mindset; you can say that we mirror each other. They are 50 % male and 50 % female and range from sports talents to business people in their late fifties.
What do your clients expect from you?
I get the best results with people if they are as dedicated and target-oriented as I am. A typical example is a female client who is the CEO at a large pharmaceutical company. She came to the conclusion that she couldn’t achieve the results she wanted if she wasn’t in the optimum physical and mental shape. She is not at all a sports person but she has the willpower, and the courage, to abstain from her bad habits and focus on her health. I really respect that and together we achieve great results.
How do you help your clients achieve success?
Most of it is in your head. You need to take control over your everyday life, your food, your planning. Physical and mental health is a prerequisite for you to be able to deliver the optimum results in all other fields. My most successful clients are quite brave; they dare to choose to do without, whether it be alcohol, sweets or just relaxing on the couch, and take responsibility for their own lives!
How did you get into CrossFit?
I began lifting weights at the age of eighteen, when I did my upper secondary education with Team Denmark at Virum Gymnasium. The men’s team had this Swedish coach who was an expert at weight lifting and, as usual, I latched on to him, learning from the best. This ensured me a homogenous body – I was strong all over – and saved me from injuries. CrossFit was a natural progression from here.
Why should ‘regular people’ train CrossFit?
CrossFit is really great all-round training. You train cardio and strength, and you’re part of a team, which will motivate and encourage you. Your team mates will cheer you on; you release loads of endorphins and you leave the CrossFit sessions on a physical and mental high.
