Cellulite: How to prevent it and how to get rid of it

James Davis, Healing Expert and co-founder of 38 Degrees North, shares his expert knowledge on cellulite - how we can prevent it and what action we can take to get cellulite-free in time for Summer.

Cellulite is a condition that affects a large number of women, typically making itself apparent with an orange peel like appearance of the skin on the upper thighs and buttocks region, and occasionally in the abdomen as well. Cellulite itself is dense subcutaneous fat within the connective tissue of the body - effectively a compacted type of fat.

It is notoriously stubborn to shift, but how can you avoid it? And once you have it, how can you effectively treat it?

Well there are a number of factors involved including:

  • genetic predisposition (which currently you can’t do a lot about)
  • hormonal factors (though this is still up for debate)
  • stress
  • diet
  • exercise

So let’s look at those last three factors, as we can have active control over them.  Firstly, try to have a stress-free lifestyle, practice meditation or yoga to relieve stress and take time out for yourself. This is also linked to exercise. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce stress, plus keeping active burns fat, lessening the chance of cellulite forming, particularly if you focus on high-intensity training with plenty of legs work - circuits are ideal. Finally, nutrition - try to keep a healthy balanced diet, free of saturated fats and processed foods. We’re big fans of  'from sea or field to table' approach - think grilled fish, lean meat and organic salads (38N retreat menu is based on this approach) as well as only eating food that is simply prepared, simply cooked and without sauces.

If you already have cellulite, then the above is going to help you reduce it. You can also turn to technology. On our retreats, we utilise pressotherapy - an intense machine massage type that stimulates the lymph gland, flushing toxins from the body (which are often held in fat cells) and helping to reduce cellulite. We also use cavitation, this machine fires ultrasonic waves into the body bursting fat cells so that the fat can be either flushed from the body by the renal system of utilisied for energy. Again this is a great treatment for stubborn hard fat areas and cellulite. When combined with intense exercise it’s particularly effective - check out our Optimal Weight Loss retreat where we combine daily exercise with these cutting edge slimming treatments to deliver excellent results.
