Lanserhof Lans, Sylt Or Tegernsee: Which Medical Retreat Is Right for You?

28/07/2026, Healing Holidays

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that a holiday cannot fix. You know it. A week in the sun returns you to the same inbox, the same patterns, the same body that was asking for something more than a change of scenery. The spa weekend helps for approximately three days. The detox app lasts a fortnight. And then, at some point, someone mentions Lanserhof.

The name carries weight in the circles where people take their health as seriously as they take everything else. It is the retreat that the cardiologist recommends after the check-up that gave you pause. It is where the friend who came back looking genuinely different spent two weeks in January. It is, by any serious measure, one of the most medically rigorous and consistently effective health retreat groups in the world, and it has been quietly operating in that position since 1984.

What began as a single medical health retreat in the Austrian Tyrol has become, over four decades, a group of properties that share a philosophy and a clinical framework while offering experiences that are, in practice, significantly different from one another. The Lanserhof Concept, built on Modern Mayr Medicine, advanced diagnostics and the conviction that the body needs extended periods of rest and digestive recovery to genuinely regenerate, is the same at each location. The medical director at Lans, the coastal light at Sylt, the open fireplace in a Tegernsee suite overlooking the Bavarian Alps at the end of a ten-day programme: those are not the same at all.

Healing Holidays has been the exclusive UK partner for the Lanserhof portfolio across all three open properties. Our advisors have visited each one, sat with the medical teams, stayed in the rooms and spoken at length with guests before and after their programmes. The question we are asked more than any other is not whether Lanserhof is worth it. It is which one.

This guide is our answer.

Which Lanserhof is Best?

There is no single best Lanserhof. The right property depends entirely on what you need medically, how long you are staying, and which environment will actually allow you to stop.

Lanserhof Lans in Austria is the founding property: the most concentrated, most intimate and most classically Mayr in character. Lanserhof Sylt in Germany offers the specific therapeutic quality of North Sea coastal isolation and the only neurological sleep programme in the group. Lanserhof Tegernsee, also in Germany, holds the World's Best Medical Spa title for 2025 and offers the most extensive diagnostic and programme range of any property in the portfolio. A fourth property, Lanserhof Marbella, opens in 2027.

If you want the fastest answer: go to Lans for a classical gut-health detox, Sylt for sleep or coastal immersion, and Tegernsee for the broadest medical scope. Read on for the detail that makes the difference.

Key Takeaways

  • All four Lanserhof properties apply the same underlying medical philosophy: the LANS Med Concept, built on Modern Mayr Medicine, advanced diagnostics and highly personalised programmes.
  • The settings are genuinely different therapeutic environments. Alpine Austria, North Sea Germany, Bavarian Bavaria and, in 2027, Andalusian Spain each offer different restorative conditions.
  • Lanserhof Lans is the most intimate and the most focused on the classical Mayr detox. It is also the only property with dedicated Hormone Balance and Mental Health programmes.
  • Lanserhof Sylt is the only property with a Neuro Sleep Reset programme and the strongest team for cardiovascular diagnostics and dermatology. The island setting creates a specific kind of enforced stillness.
  • Lanserhof Tegernsee is the most programmatically comprehensive, the largest and the winner of the World Spa Awards Best Medical Spa 2025. Unique programmes include Brain Health, Rehabilitation, Weight and Sports, Energy Balance and Global Beauty.
  • Lanserhof Marbella opens in 2027 on the grounds of Finca Cortesin and will be the group's first Mediterranean property, with 71 rooms and a total investment of €93 million.
  • Price entry points are broadly similar for core programmes, with Tegernsee carrying a premium that reflects its scale and diagnostic depth.
  • All three open properties are available exclusively through Healing Holidays, with combinable free-night offers across the portfolio.

Lanserhof Lans, Sylt, Tegernsee or Marbella: Which Property Is Right for You?

The question comes up constantly. A guest calls Healing Holidays having decided they want a Lanserhof programme. They know what they are looking for: a medically supervised detox, a structured gut-health reset, a serious week or two away from the life that has been slowly depleting them. What they have not yet decided is where.

The three open properties share a philosophy, a clinical framework and a name. Beyond that, they are meaningfully different. The setting, the medical team, the programme range, the accommodation character and the type of guest each property tends to attract all vary in ways that matter when you are spending two weeks in one of them. A fourth property arrives in 2027. This article attempts to describe those differences honestly, without oversimplification.

The Settings: Three Therapeutic Environments, One Forthcoming

Start with the landscape, because at Lanserhof the landscape is not decorative. It is considered part of the treatment.

Lanserhof Lans sits in the Austrian Tyrol, in the village of Lans, approximately 20 minutes from Innsbruck Airport. The setting is Alpine in the most complete sense: forested hillsides, mountain air, clean light and the particular silence of a valley that has not been developed for tourism. The property was extensively transformed before reopening in 2017 and presents a contemporary minimalist interior that sits quietly within the landscape rather than competing with it. Of the three open properties, Lans has the most intimate atmosphere. It is the founding location of the Lanserhof concept, and something of that original seriousness persists in how the place feels.

Lanserhof Sylt occupies a position above the harbour of List on the North Sea island of Sylt, between the dunes and the Wadden Sea. The UNESCO-protected landscape stretches in both directions. The architect Christoph Ingenhoven designed the building using exclusively ecological and health-friendly materials, and the result is a structure that sits convincingly in one of the most exposed natural environments in northern Europe. The therapeutic logic of the setting is specific to Sylt: iodine-rich coastal air, tidal rhythms, low light intensity in certain seasons and a near-total absence of ambient stimulation. The island enforces the programme in a way that no inland property can quite replicate.

Lanserhof Tegernsee is above Lake Tegern in the Bavarian foothills. The valley is wider, the lake is visible, and the Bavarian Alps provide a backdrop that changes with the seasons. Skiing in winter, hiking and mountain biking in summer and autumn, Nordic walking year-round. Of the three properties, Tegernsee is the one where the outdoor Alpine environment is most actively integrated into the medical programme itself.

Lanserhof Marbella, opening in 2027, takes the group in an entirely different climatic direction. Located on the grounds of the celebrated Finca Cortesin resort, close to the village of Casares and 1.5 km from the Andalusian coast, it will be the first Lanserhof in Southern Europe and the first to operate in a Mediterranean climate. The site benefits from proximity to Puerto Banús and Sotogrande marinas, and is approximately 50 minutes from Málaga International Airport. Whether the Andalusian setting will carry the same therapeutic logic as the Northern European properties remains to be seen, but the investment of €93 million and the association with one of Spain's most established luxury resort properties suggests a serious intent.

The Medical Teams: Different Specialisms, Different Strengths

All three medical teams apply the Lanserhof Concept with the same seriousness. But the medical directors have different clinical backgrounds, and those differences shape each property's offering in practical ways.

At Lans, Dr. Katharina Sandtner leads a team with strong roots in F.X. Mayr diagnostics, neural therapy and orthomolecular medicine. The team covers internal medicine, cardiology, infectiology and post-viral syndromes, integrative and complementary disciplines. The result is a team that handles the classical Lanserhof detox and gut-health reset with particular depth, while also offering specific capability in hormonal health, Long COVID recovery and the full spectrum of Mayr-based therapeutic nutrition.

At Sylt, Dr. Jan Stritzke is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. His clinical background gives the Sylt team a specific strength in cardiovascular diagnostics and performance medicine, reflected clearly in the programme design. The team also includes two dermatology specialists, which is unusual in a medical wellness context and gives the beauty and skin-focused programmes a clinical credibility that goes beyond what most retreats offer in this category. The Neuro Sleep Reset programme reflects a further investment in neurological and neurofeedback expertise that exists nowhere else in the group.

At Tegernsee, Dr. Elke Benedetto-Reisch leads the most programmatically diverse team in the portfolio. The team includes a specialist in physical and rehabilitative medicine, a surgeon with general medicine training, and a physician whose qualifications span internal medicine, naturopathy, acupuncture, emergency medicine and travel medicine. The result is a team that can support the widest range of health conditions in the group. The Brain Health programme, the Rehabilitation programme and the INUSpheresis procedure all reflect specific clinical investments exclusive to Tegernsee.

The Programme Ranges: What Each Property Uniquely Offers

All three offer the Cure Classic and Cure Classic Plus, the Essential Health Check-Up, Me Time, a Beauty programme and a Semaglutide Management programme. These shared programmes are delivered with the same clinical framework at each property, but the medical team, diagnostic equipment and setting shape the individual experience.

Beyond the shared core, each property has a distinct programme identity.

Lans is the most compact in room size and the most restrained in design: contemporary Alpine minimalism, natural timber, loden textiles and floor-to-ceiling windows framing mountain views. Rooms are not designed to be destinations in themselves. They are quiet, well-made spaces for the hours between treatments.

Sylt offers the most architecturally specific accommodation in the group. The duplex suites, with sleeping areas under thatched rooflines, are unlike anything available at the other properties. The FreshBed sleep technology built into selected rooms reflects the Sylt team's interest in chronobiology. The range starts larger than Lans but stops shorter than Tegernsee at the top end.

Tegernsee starts at 55 m² for the standard Double Room, making it the most generously proportioned entry category in the portfolio. The suites with open fireplaces create a residential warmth that the other properties do not offer, and the Pavilion Suite operates on a different level entirely: a self-contained building with private chef, gym, steam, sauna and private treatment delivery.

Lanserhof Marbella: What Is Coming in 2027

For guests who have visited one or more of the three existing properties and are already thinking ahead, Lanserhof Marbella represents the group's most significant expansion since Sylt.

Located on the exclusive grounds of Finca Cortesin, one of Spain's most celebrated resort hotels, close to the village of Casares and approximately 50 minutes from Málaga International Airport, Lanserhof Marbella will be the first Lanserhof property in Southern Europe and the first in the Mediterranean. It will operate on the same LANS Med Concept that governs all Lanserhof properties, but in a context that differs from the existing three in one fundamental respect: year-round warmth, extended daylight and a coastal Mediterranean environment rather than a northern European one.

The development spans 23,500 m² of building area on a 19,800 m² site. It will house 71 rooms and suites, medical facilities across 2,900 m², and spa, wellness and movement areas across 1,840 m². The total investment is €93 million. Construction began in Q3 2024, with the opening scheduled for 2027.

What the programme range, medical team and room categories will look like has not yet been confirmed. What is confirmed is the ambition: the CEO of the Lanserhof Group, Dr. Christian Harisch, has described the Marbella opening as a significant milestone in the group's aim to make its health services accessible to more people across Europe. For guests who want to be among the first to book, a priority registration list is already open through Lanserhof directly.

For Healing Holidays guests who have been to Tegernsee in winter or Sylt in November, the prospect of the same quality of medical programme in guaranteed Andalusian sunshine may, once 2027 arrives, be the most persuasive answer to the question of which Lanserhof is right for them.

Who Each Property Is Really For

After all the programme details and room specifications, this is the question that matters.

Lanserhof Lans is the right choice for guests who want the closest possible connection to the founding Lanserhof identity. It is the most medically focused of the three in atmosphere as well as design: smaller, quieter, more austere and more concentrated on the Mayr-based detox in its classical form. It is also the choice for guests with specific requirements in hormonal health or mental health that the dedicated programmes at Lans address with a depth the other properties do not currently match. For a first Lanserhof experience centred entirely on gut-health reset and digestive regeneration, Lans remains the reference point.

Lanserhof Sylt is the right choice for guests who need the programme to work partly through the environment itself. The island does something to the nervous system that lakes and mountains do not quite replicate: the combination of coastal isolation, North Sea air and the near-complete absence of ambient distraction accelerates the surrender that makes the programme effective. Sylt is also the only choice for guests whose primary objective is neurological sleep restoration, and for those whose health concerns include cardiovascular function or the dermatological dimension of skin health.

Lanserhof Tegernsee is the right choice for guests who need the broadest possible medical scope, the most advanced diagnostic tools or a programme that does not exist at the other properties. Brain Health, Rehabilitation, Weight and Sports, Energy Balance and the full INUSpheresis programme are reasons in themselves to choose Tegernsee. So is the outdoor Alpine environment if seasonal activity is part of how the guest understands recovery, and so is the accommodation if an open fireplace and a 100 m² Bavarian forest view are how a guest needs to end each day of a 14-night programme.

Lanserhof Marbella will, from 2027, be the right choice for guests who want the Lanserhof medical standard in a Mediterranean climate, and for those for whom year-round warmth, extended outdoor seasons and proximity to southern Spain are relevant factors.

The Healing Holidays Verdict

Lanserhof Lans, Sylt and Tegernsee are three of the best medically supervised health retreats in Europe. Choosing between them is not a question of quality. It is a question of fit.

If you want the classical Lanserhof detox in its most concentrated form, in the mountains where the philosophy was developed, go to Lans.

If you want the programme to be intensified by the specific restorative properties of a North Sea island, or if neurological sleep restoration is your primary clinical objective, go to Sylt.

If you want the widest diagnostic range, the most extensive programme choice, a Brain Health assessment, an open fireplace at the end of a long treatment day, or simply the property that the World Spa Awards named the best medical spa in the world in 2025, go to Tegernsee.

And if you can wait until 2027, and the idea of the same medical quality beside the Andalusian coast is what you have been looking for, register your interest for Marbella now.

The Healing Holidays team has visited all three open properties. They will tell you which one is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I visit more than one Lanserhof property to combine programmes?

Yes, and some guests do exactly this, particularly those who return annually. A Cure Classic at Lans in spring and a shorter Essential Health Check-Up at Tegernsee in autumn, for example, can serve different objectives across the year. Healing Holidays can advise on sequencing across properties and on whether any medical history from a previous stay at one property is transferable to inform the programme at another.

2. Is the Mayr cure the same at all three properties?

The clinical principles are identical. F.X. Mayr Medicine, digestive rest, Energy Cuisine and the therapeutic nutrition framework are consistent across Lans, Sylt and Tegernsee. The differences lie in the depth of additional diagnostics, the physical therapies available and the specific experience of each medical team. A guest following a Cure Classic at Lans is following the same foundational protocol as one at Tegernsee, but the doctors prescribing it have different specialisms and different diagnostic tools at their disposal.

3. Which Lanserhof is best for a first visit if I have never done a medical detox before?

All three have four-night introductory programmes that serve as entry points without requiring a commitment to a full seven-night cure. For a first visit focused on the classical Mayr experience, Lans is the most historically rooted choice. For a first visit where the setting needs to do some of the psychological work of getting you to stop, Sylt's island isolation is unusually effective. For a first visit where you want access to the widest possible range of diagnostics from the start, Tegernsee's Essential Health Check-Up or Soft Detox provides that breadth in four nights.

4. Are the programmes at Lanserhof Sylt and Tegernsee genuinely different or just the same thing in a different place?

They share the same medical philosophy and the same core programme structure, but several programmes are specific to one property and unavailable at the other. The Neuro Sleep Reset, Men's Health, Women's Health and Sport and Meditation programmes exist only at Sylt. Brain Health, Rehabilitation, Weight and Sports, Energy Balance and Global Beauty exist only at Tegernsee. If your objective aligns with one of those exclusive programmes, the choice is made for you.

5. Which Lanserhof is most suitable for couples?

All three accommodate couples. The Symphonia Suite at Tegernsee is specifically designed for two guests who want shared space with the option of independent retreating, and the Elysium Duo Suite provides two full bedrooms with separate bathrooms in 100 m². At Sylt, the duplex suites are intimate enough for couples who want to share the experience closely. At Lans, the Grand Double Rooms and corner suites provide generous shared space. The honest advice is that couples who come to Lanserhof together tend to have different programmes and different daily schedules from day two onward: the accommodation needs to work as a place of rest and recovery rather than primarily as shared living space.

6. Is there a Lanserhof that is better suited to guests who are new to the Mayr diet?

The Soft Detox at Tegernsee is explicitly designed as a gentler introduction to the Mayr approach, without the level of dietary restriction that the classical Cure Classic requires. At Lans and Sylt, the Me Time programme is the more accessible entry point, though it is less medically focused than the Soft Detox. For guests who are concerned about the dietary adjustment, Healing Holidays' advisors consistently recommend reducing coffee and alcohol intake for a week before arrival and discussing any specific concerns with the medical team during the initial consultation, where dietary levels can be adjusted accordingly.

7. What is the difference between the INUSpheresis programme at Lans and at Tegernsee?

INUSpheresis is a specialist blood-purification procedure available at both Lans and Tegernsee. At Lans it is offered on request and subject to medical suitability assessment. At Tegernsee it is offered as a dedicated 5 or 7-night programme starting from £7,399 pp sharing. The procedure itself involves the removal of selected substances from the blood plasma before it is returned to the body, and is described by Lanserhof as supporting the body's self-healing capacity and reducing inflammation. Suitability must be confirmed by the medical team at either property before the programme is agreed.

8. When will Lanserhof Marbella open and how do I register interest?

Lanserhof Marbella is currently under construction on the grounds of Finca Cortesin, near Casares on the Andalusian coast, with an opening planned for 2027. It will be the first Lanserhof property in Spain and the first in the Mediterranean, with 71 rooms and suites, 2,900 m² of medical facilities and a total development investment of €93 million. Programme details and pricing have not yet been released. Healing Holidays will communicate details to its client base as soon as bookings become available.
