Clinique La Prairie Review: Inside the Original Medical Spa in Montreux, Switzerland
30/09/2026, Frances GeogheganClinique La Prairie is a medical longevity clinic and 5-star wellness hotel in Montreux, Switzerland, founded in 1931. With more than 50 medical specialists on site, it is closer to a private hospital than a spa. I've just returned from a detox and rejuvenation stay, and it is the most medically serious wellness destination I've visited.
I arrived with real anticipation and some emotion. This is the place that invented the medi-spa, and after more than 20 years of sending guests to the world's best clinics, I wanted to see whether it still deserves its legend. It does.
Where is Clinique La Prairie?
The clinic sits in Montreux, about an hour from Geneva airport, just above Lake Geneva with the Alps rising behind it. The calm starts as soon as you leave the motorway and wind down towards the water.
The estate is spread across three buildings set in manicured gardens that slope down to the lake: the historic Résidence, the Château on higher ground, and the glass-and-white Medical Centre, reached by a discreet underground corridor. Together there are 38 rooms and suites, a 1,600 m² spa, and buildings dedicated entirely to medical care. The lounges, pool and many rooms look straight out at the mountains.

What is the history of Clinique La Prairie?
In the 1930s, Swiss surgeon Dr Paul Niehans developed a cellular therapy here to slow ageing. Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Winston Churchill and Marlene Dietrich followed. After Dr Niehans treated Pope Pius XII in 1953, the clinic became world famous. The Mattli family bought it in 1980, opened the Medical Centre in 1991, and today Gregor Mattli is taking the brand global, including a Longevity Hub in Doha. Signed letters from past guests still line a corridor downstairs.
What makes Clinique La Prairie different from other medical spas?
The medicine. Over 50 specialists work on site, plus more than 30 therapists covering wellness, physiotherapy and paramedical care. There are more doctors than rooms. I have never seen that anywhere else.
This means a week-long guest can complete a full medical check-up with leading specialists in days, not months. The clinic also treats Swiss outpatients for all kinds of conditions. It is a real clinic, backed by a luxury hotel, and you feel the seriousness in every appointment.
Every programme is built on four pillars of longevity: medicine, nutrition, movement and wellbeing. Each starts with a medical consultation and health screening. From there, doctors create a personal plan and adjust it daily based on your results and how you feel. Your next day's schedule is left outside your door each evening.

What programmes does Clinique La Prairie offer?
Programmes last 7 days / 6 nights, except the 3-day Health Diagnostic, and most begin on Sundays. Every stay starts with the Longevity Master Assessment, a set of screenings that measures key longevity markers, estimates biological age and shapes the programme that follows.
- Revitalisation: the signature programme and the one the clinic is famous for. It is built around immune enhancement, cellular regeneration and energy restoration, and is the right starting point for most first-time guests. It uses the clinic's own CLP Extract, developed here since 1992.
- Revitalisation Premium: the deeper version, with extra assessments focused on metabolism, brain structure, mental health, cardiovascular health and sleep, and exceptional access to the medical team throughout.
- Master Detox: combines DNA diagnostics, advanced tests, an anti-inflammatory diet, personalised nutrition and wellness treatments to purify the body and support the gut microbiome.
- Brain Potential: the result of a two-year collaboration with CHUV's Neuroimaging Lab in Lausanne, focused on cognitive performance, neuro-inflammation and mental clarity.
- Life Reset: for guests coming out of prolonged stress, exhaustion or burnout. It is the clinic's least medical and most holistic programme.
- Healthy Weight: a medically supervised programme for sustainable weight management.
- Health Diagnostic: an exclusive 3-day medical assessment, available only at Montreux.
- Stem Cells Protocol: allows you to harvest your own stem cells under Swiss medical standards, often booked alongside another programme.
Programmes can be combined. To pair Revitalisation Premium with Master Detox or Brain Potential, the stay should be extended over two weeks.

What does longevity really mean? My conversation with Dr Adrian Heini
One of the highlights of my stay was a long conversation with Dr Adrian Heini, Clinique La Prairie's Medical Director. A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine in Lausanne, he joined the clinic's medical team in 2000 and has spent more than 25 years here. His expertise spans internal medicine, preventive care and nutrition, and his particular passion is obesity and energy metabolism. He has played a key role in developing the clinic's medical and longevity programmes.
I wanted to ask him what longevity really means, because the word is everywhere right now. Social media is full of noise about it, and there is a whole culture of people spending millions a year in the hope of living forever. Dr Heini's view was refreshingly clear. Nobody really wants to live forever. What matters is how well you live. When the pursuit of a longer life leaves out the living itself, it becomes a pointless exercise.
His philosophy is a simple one: move your body, eat good food, sleep well and enjoy your life. Nothing extreme, nothing controversial. Coming from the medical director of the world's most famous longevity clinic, that felt both surprising and exactly right. Behind all the advanced diagnostics and cellular science, the goal at Clinique La Prairie is a healthier, fuller life, not an endless one.

My experience: the team who looked after me
I knew Clinique La Prairie would be the best in the world on medical diagnostics. What I didn't expect was how exceptional the staff would be across every specialism, from assessment and fitness to massage, breathing and nutrition. Every person I met was top drawer.
The wellbeing assessment. Cindy carried out my wellbeing assessment, and she was thorough and completely non-judgemental. It set the tone for the whole stay.
Fitness and cognitive testing. My fitness assessment was with Quentin, who was charming, funny and endlessly encouraging. The clinic has state-of-the-art equipment to analyse body composition, balance and reactions, including a Senaptec sensory evaluation, the same technology used by elite football clubs. My TANITA body composition scan gave me happy news, and reflected a younger age than my years. . Other results were far less flattering. Some of the tests I found impossible, and it became clear my short-term memory isn't what it should be. Quentin stayed upbeat and reassuring throughout, and I left with a clear plan to get back on track, including working with a personal trainer at home.
Deep detox massage. Rozenn gave me a brilliant deep detox massage and worked out knots I didn't know I was carrying.
Breathwork. My breathing session was with Phil, from Greece, whose advice was wise and made complete sense. My takeaways: set aside time each day simply to breathe deeply, and give myself ten minutes each morning with my own thoughts before facing the world.
Nutrition. Giorgia, my nutritionist from Italy, was the picture of good health, and as funny as she was smart. Her key advice for me was to increase my protein. She also gave me a simple rule for every meal: make it a colourful plate.
Photobiomodulation. This light therapy uses red and near-infrared light to support cellular energy and recovery. It felt strange, but it was fascinating.
AudioVitality. This sound and vibration therapy uses low-frequency waves to induce deep relaxation and support sleep. It really shook up my system; I could feel it as much as I heard it. Adeline explained everything clearly beforehand, which helped.
Spa Wave. A different acoustic and vibration therapy designed to guide the brain into deep rest. I'm always "speedy", and this was the first thing in years that truly slowed me down.
The spa itself has a heated indoor pool with windows onto the lake and mountains, sauna, steam room, Kneipp path, sensory showers, an ice fountain, a relaxation room and a gym with Technogym and Kinesis equipment. There are more than 50 treatments, including cryotherapy, infrared, neurostimulation and cellular facials by Swiss Perfection.
I left rested and energised, with honest results and a practical plan, which is exactly what a stay like this should give you.
What is the food like at Clinique La Prairie?
Exceptional, and nothing like diet food. Meals are served at SEEDS, the clinic's restaurant, where chef David Alessandria brings experience from Michelin-starred kitchens in Belgium and Luxembourg. The dishes are as beautiful as they are delicious, and even on a detox programme I was never hungry.
What is an anti-inflammatory diet?
Chronic, low-level inflammation is linked to many of the diseases of ageing, from heart disease to cognitive decline. An anti-inflammatory diet uses whole, unprocessed, nutrient-rich foods to calm it. At Clinique La Prairie, the aim of every meal is to reduce oxidative stress, improve metabolic function and restore a healthy gut microbiome. The clinic sees food as medicine, and nutrition is one of the four pillars of every programme.
In practice, that means a menu that is mostly plant-based and free from gluten, lactose and caffeine. Dishes are built on fresh vegetables, legumes, herbs, spices, healthy oils, fermented foods and plant-based proteins, with natural alternatives to refined sugar. Dinners are largely vegan, fish and seafood appear regularly, and red meat is served just once a week.
What do they serve at SEEDS?
Breakfast is followed by three-course set menus at lunch and dinner, desserts included. There are separate Longevity, Detox and Healthy Weight menus, so what you eat matches your programme, and the nutrition team meets every guest on arrival so the kitchen can adapt dishes to individual needs and goals.
Plates are colourful and generous, full of seeds, bright fruit and vegetables, and good oils. A standout example is lobster tail with kimchi, paprika, romanesco and wholegrain quinoa: proof that healthy food can feel like a treat.
Gut health runs through everything. The menus combine prebiotics, the fibres that feed good bacteria, found in garlic, onions and asparagus, with probiotics, the beneficial bacteria found in fermented foods such as yoghurt, miso and kombucha. Omega-3-rich fish, nuts and seeds support the brain and heart.
It is a way of eating you can take home. My own nutritionist, Giorgia, sent me away with two simple rules: more protein, and a colourful plate at every meal.
How do you get to Clinique La Prairie?
Fly into Geneva. The clinic is about an hour's drive from Geneva airport, and a private limousine transfer is included in the package. Mine was easy and smooth, straight from arrivals to the clinic door, with the lake and the Alps for company most of the way. Lausanne is around 30 minutes away and Zurich about two hours. The address is Rue du Lac 142, 1815 Clarens-Montreux.
How long should you stay?
Most programmes run for 7 days / 6 nights and begin on a Sunday, while the Health Diagnostic takes 3 days. My own stay focused on detox and the anti-inflammatory approach. The clinic is open all year, though spring to autumn brings the best weather for walks along the lake.
What are the rooms like at Clinique La Prairie?
The 38 rooms and suites are spread across three buildings, and every one has views of the lake, the Alps or the gardens. Le Château, the main hotel building, sits on higher ground, and most of its rooms and suites have a balcony or terrace looking out over the lake and mountains. La Résidence is the original building where Dr Niehans began his research, with nine rooms and suites in the style of an early-20th-century grand hotel, overlooking the French garden. The upper floors of the Medical Centre hold medically equipped rooms and suites for guests recovering from procedures, with panoramic lake views. Categories range from Superior and Deluxe rooms to Junior Suites and larger signature suites.
I stayed in a Junior Suite, with a separate living room and a lovely veranda overlooking the garden and the lake. The bed was made for comfort, dressed in exquisite cotton sheets. Sleep is one of the things the programmes focus on most, and you can tell the clinic has thought carefully about creating the perfect conditions for it. The TV carries the full range of English channels, a small but welcome touch that made the suite feel like home.
Service was attentive throughout. Every afternoon, tea arrived in my room with something sweet but free of sugar, a reminder that rest matters here as much as any treatment.
Is Clinique La Prairie worth the money?
Yes. Longevity has become a buzzword, but at Clinique La Prairie it means something real. Nearly a century of research, more than 50 doctors across 25 specialities, and a team of therapists, coaches and nutritionists all work towards one goal: helping you live longer, and live better.
Plenty of places talk about longevity. Very few have the medical team, the diagnostics and the track record to actually deliver it. Clinique La Prairie does. You leave with real data about your health, specialist advice you would wait months for elsewhere, and a practical plan to follow at home.
It is a significant investment, but you are paying for expertise, not marketing. For anyone serious about ageing well, whether you want a thorough health check fast, have a family history you want to get ahead of, or simply want to feel your best for decades to come, it is worth every franc.

FAQS
1. What is the Revitalisation programme and is it right for first-time guests?

2. What kind of assessments and treatments are included in a typical stay?

3. How many doctors and specialities are covered on site?
Clinique La Prairie's Medical Centre brings together more than 50 doctors and surgeons across 25 specialities, from cardiology and neurology to dermatology and psychiatry, meaning a week-long guest can complete a full range of consultations without leaving the clinic.
4. What is the food like, and does it fit an anti-inflammatory diet?
Meals at SEEDS restaurant are largely plant-based, gluten- and caffeine-free, and built to reduce inflammation and support gut health, yet the review describes the food as beautiful, generous and never leaving guests hungry, even on a detox programme.
5. What results can guests expect from the fitness and cognitive testing?

6. What nutrition advice do guests typically leave with?
Beyond the in-clinic menus, nutritionists give guests simple, take-home habits. In Frances's case, increasing protein and building a "colourful plate" at every meal, designed to support an anti-inflammatory way of eating long after the stay ends.
7. What is the Longevity Master Assessment, and does every stay start with it?
Every stay begins with the Longevity Master Assessment, a set of screenings that measures key longevity markers, estimates biological age and shapes the personalised programme that follows, based on results from that first day.
