How we breathe is fundamental to our health and all aspects of our wellbeing, so it’s not just your lungs that cigarettes are affecting when you start breathing.
Stress affects our breath and makes it shorter; this in turn creates even more stress in the mind. Anything that artificially shortens our breath, like smoking, adds to this vicious circle. You might think that having a sneaky cigarette here and there calms your nerves and helps with your stress, but in fact the reverse is true - smoking, even occasionally, damages your lungs and makes you more predisposed to much more shallow breathing - which makes you feel stressed, which makes you think you probably need another cigarette.
If we can break this cycle of smoking to relieve stress, then getting stressed because of it, everything will feel infinitely lighter. Yes, it’s a difficult cycle to break - but nothing worth having ever came easy.
Smoking inhibits the gaseous exchange in our bodies. It kills vitamin C, and quite honestly I see no positives to it. These days’ only one in six people in the UK smoke - and when you do come across a smoker, the smell of the smoke on their breath, their clothes, in their hair, really stands out. It makes your breath smell, your teeth black, your skin yellow and your voice husky.
These days there are all sorts of fancy ways to help you quit smoking - hypnosis, gum, patches, and those funny fake cigarettes that light up – simply put there is no reason to carry on smoking. Imagine how good you’ll feel when you stop!
