My Experience at Park Igls Medical Spa Resort
My stay at Park Igls Medical Spa Resort in late September was far more than a simple wellness break. It was stepping away from normal life completely and giving both body and mind the chance to properly recover. The weather was beautifully warm for the time of year, the mountains stood clear against bright blue skies every day, and from the moment I arrived I had the strong feeling that this was a place that genuinely cared about helping people feel better. I left knowing without question that I will return.
The Arrival & Medical Consultation
Getting there had not been my smartest decision. Rather than taking the very easy option of flying directly into Innsbruck, I chose to fly into Munich instead, which turned out to involve a dreadful flight followed by a long and tiring transfer through heavy traffic. By the time I finally arrived at the resort late in the evening I was exhausted.
Walking into the reception immediately changed my mood. The space was calm, bright and welcoming, and the staff could not have been kinder. Everything was handled smoothly and without fuss. Within minutes I had all the information I needed for my stay, had been shown to my room, which was clean, spacious and comfortable, and was on my way to meet the doctor for my first consultation.
Dr Peter Gartner
The Medical Director, Dr Peter Gartner, instantly put me at ease. He was warm, energetic and completely genuine, and I felt comfortable discussing my health concerns straight away. I had already sent through my scans and medical reports before arriving, so he understood my medical history in detail. After asking thoughtful questions and carrying out a gentle examination, he created a programme focused on supporting my weakened immune system and helping my body regain strength. My days included IV drips along with red light and near infrared therapy, treatments designed to support cellular recovery and overall wellbeing.
The Mayr Diet & Nutrition
Food and nutrition are central to life at Park Igls. Dr Gartner suggested I follow the resort’s Diet 4 programme, based around food combining, which felt manageable and realistic for me. Before each meal I was instructed to take herbal drops mixed with water, which he jokingly described as taking “like a Campari”, along with alkaline capsules. Every morning also began with a glass of Bitter Salts as part of the Mayr detox process. It was certainly not the highlight of the day, but I quickly accepted that it was all part of the experience.
Dinner was served between six and seven each evening in quiet dining rooms designed more for calm and reflection than indulgence. On my first night I was shown to the table that would remain mine throughout my stay by one of the lovely waitresses dressed in traditional Austrian clothing. There was something comforting about the routine of it all. Guests arrived quietly, ate slowly and disappeared early into the evening.
The meals were beautifully prepared and, although the portions were tiny, every mouthful felt thoughtful and deeply satisfying. What surprised me most was how much flavour and care went into dishes designed as part of a health programme. Each bite genuinely delighted my taste buds. The soups in particular were exceptional, rich with flavour despite their simplicity, made from locally sourced vegetables and delicately balanced spices. There were fresh local fish dishes, creamy goat’s cheese and wonderfully seasonal ingredients throughout the menu. Nothing felt heavy or excessive, yet every meal felt like a treat rather than a restriction.
Spa Facilities & Healing Treatments
The spa facilities quickly became one of my favourite parts of the retreat. There were saunas, steam rooms, an indoor pool and an ice pool, all beautifully maintained and wonderfully peaceful. Most guests went to bed early, which meant the spa area often felt almost empty at night. I loved swimming alone in complete silence before bed. There was also a designated sauna for guests who preferred swimwear, although I found myself surprisingly unbothered by the traditional Austrian approach after the first couple of days. You simply stop noticing it.
The treatments themselves were exceptional. The therapy rooms were spotless, calming and deeply relaxing. During one body exfoliation treatment the massage bed slowly transformed into a warm water bed beneath me, leaving me floating in warmth while Handel played softly in the background. It was blissful. Harald and Melanie gave some of the best massages I have ever had, carefully working through the tension in my neck and shoulders until I felt physically lighter.
Movement & The Healing Environment
I was incredibly lucky with the weather during my stay and spent hours walking through the surrounding countryside. The scenery was breathtaking. Church bells echoed through the valley, cows grazed quietly in green fields and the mountain air felt wonderfully clean and fresh. I also enjoyed exercising in the gym on the third floor, where the views across the mountains somehow made training feel enjoyable. During my stay I met with Gert, the physiotherapist, who assessed my posture and mobility and gave me a couple of simple exercises to strengthen weaker areas. His approach was gentle, practical and encouraging.
What I valued most about Park Igls, though, was the quietness of it all. Sitting peacefully with a cup of tea and a book between treatments became one of the most restorative parts of the experience. Some people may wish for more entertainment or distraction, but I did not need any of that. I came to rest, to recover and to heal, and that was exactly what this place allowed me to do.
That said, there was always plenty available for those who wanted a fuller schedule. Guests could join gentle exercise classes, hikes and a wide range of treatments throughout the day. Most people stayed for at least a week and many clearly returned year after year. There was no obvious “type” of guest either. Some arrived alone, some as couples, others with friends. While many guests were German, Swiss or British, there was a genuinely international atmosphere that made everyone feel comfortable.
The Final Verdict
At the end of my stay I had one final consultation with Dr Gartner. To my surprise I had lost two and a half kilos, but more importantly I felt clearer, lighter and noticeably healthier. He talked me through a detailed report and gave me practical advice for maintaining the improvements once I returned home. He mentioned that they sometimes photograph guests at the beginning and end of their stay because the difference can be remarkable. I understood exactly what he meant.
Park Igls is not about luxury for the sake of appearances. It is a deeply caring and nurturing place filled with kind people who genuinely want to help you feel better. There is no judgement, no pressure and no sense of pretence. Only expertise, compassion and the rare feeling that everyone around you truly wants you to recover well and leave stronger than when you arrived.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is the Modern Mayr Medicine practiced at Park Igls?
Modern Mayr Medicine is a therapeutic approach focusing heavily on gut health and the digestive system. It involves cleansing the digestive tract, learning to chew food properly (mindful eating), and balancing the body's acid-alkaline levels to boost the immune system and promote cellular regeneration.
2. Where is Park Igls located and how do I get there?
Park Igls is located in the scenic village of Igls, on a sunny plateau just above Innsbruck in the Tyrolean Alps of Austria. The most efficient way to travel is to fly directly into Innsbruck Airport, which is only a short 15-minute transfer from the clinic.
3. Do I need to have a medical condition to visit Park Igls?
Not at all. While Park Igls is fully equipped to support post-surgery recovery and manage chronic conditions, many guests visit purely for preventative health, weight management, stress relief, and deep detoxification.
4. Will I be hungry on the Mayr Diet?
While the Mayr Diet is calorie-restricted to allow your digestive system to rest, it is not a starvation diet. As Frances notes in her review, the portions are small but the meals are incredibly flavourful, thoughtfully prepared, and deeply satisfying. The clinic offers different diet "levels" tailored by your doctor.
