SHA Spain Review By Angelica Cerruti
16/07/2025, Angelica CerrutiWhy SHA Spain Stands Apart
In the ever-expanding landscape of luxury wellness retreats, few destinations have managed to combine medical rigour, Eastern philosophy, and five-star hospitality as cohesively as SHA Spain in Altea. Since its founding in 2008 by Alfredo Bataller Parietti, inspired by his own transformative health journey, SHA has quietly redefined what a wellness retreat can be, earning a reputation as one of Europe's most credible and comprehensive medical wellness destinations.
Unlike resorts that treat wellness as an aesthetic backdrop, SHA operates as a fully integrated health clinic. Its model is grounded in macrobiotic nutrition, evidence-based medicine, and cutting-edge longevity science, a triad that still feels rare in the industry. With more than 70 specialists on site, from geneticists and endocrinologists to Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners and neurocoaching experts, SHA doesn't just offer a break from the ordinary; it offers a scientifically structured reset.
What makes SHA particularly compelling right now is its forward-looking positioning in longevity and preventive health, two of the fastest-growing priorities among high-net-worth wellness travellers. The clinic has progressively built out its diagnostics offer to include genomics, epigenetics, and biomarker testing, positioning it firmly at the intersection of luxury hospitality and precision medicine. For anyone serious about their long-term health, not just a week of relaxation, SHA is in a category of its own.
Angelica Cerruti, one of Healing Holidays' Wellness Advisors, spent time at SHA Spain and returns with her firsthand insights and intel on this long-established wellness giant.

The Location
SHA Spain is just a quick 50-minute drive from the busy Alicante airport, making it super-accessible. My private transfer was waiting for me when I landed and I was quickly on my way. The property is situated up in the mountains of the Sierra Helada Natural Park in a tranquil residential area, with views back down to the coast.
Expert Insight: The location is more than just scenic, it's therapeutic by design. SHA sits at approximately 170 metres above sea level within the protected Sierra Helada Natural Park, a UNESCO-designated coastal biosphere reserve. This altitude and natural setting offers measurably cleaner air quality and lower noise pollution compared to coastal resorts, both of which are known to support deeper sleep, lower cortisol levels, and enhanced parasympathetic nervous system activation, the biological state essential for healing. The proximity to Alicante airport (one of Spain's best-connected hubs, with direct routes from London, Paris, Amsterdam, and beyond) also means that the "transition stress" of travel is kept to an absolute minimum, a thoughtful detail that many medical wellness destinations overlook.
The Accommodation
The great news is that there are plenty of room categories on offer at SHA. Even the smallest rooms, the Deluxe Room, are at least 70 sqm, and most room categories are available either with mountain or sea view. Just be aware that the coast is way down below so some of the sea view rooms really only have partial views of the sea. There is always a generous balcony or terrace though, and some of the rooms have an optional Jacuzzi. It is also worth noting that some of the rooms have recently been restyled and refurbished with a stunning modern and minimalistic design, which is very different from the decor found in some of the older rooms. I would therefore highly recommend asking Healing Holidays to request these newer rooms.
Expert Insight: SHA's room categories range from Deluxe Rooms (70 sqm) to Grand Suite Villas (350+ sqm), meaning it genuinely caters to both solo travellers and couples seeking a more expansive retreat experience. The recently renovated rooms reflect a deliberate shift toward biophilic design principles, natural materials, neutral tones, uncluttered spaces, and maximised natural light, all of which are supported by environmental psychology research as enhancers of rest and mental recovery. For guests undertaking longer programmes (7 to 28 days), investing in a higher room category tends to meaningfully improve the overall experience, as the room becomes a personal sanctuary between treatment sessions. Our Healing Holidays advisors can liaise directly with SHA's reservations team to secure recently refurbished rooms, something that isn't always guaranteed through standard booking channels
The Wellness Concept
SHA is pretty much all-encompassing. It is a wellness destination where you can experience the most effective traditional Eastern therapies in tandem with the very latest, science-based Western medicine treatments. Their great team of doctors and specialists offer a range of consultations and treatments which are totally tailor-made for a guest's needs; they have great experts in Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as specialists in fields such as preventative medicine, genetics and anti-ageing. I personally love an approach to health that is balanced so perfectly between science-based medicine and natural therapies, and at SHA these two aspects combine brilliantly. I was particularly impressed by the overall professionalism of the entire team at SHA, from the phenomenal knowledge of the doctor explaining my results, to the creative expertise of the chef who led my cooking class. It was also fascinating to experience first-hand the array of high-tech testing and bits of gizmo involved in the diagnostic circuit.
Expert Insight: What SHA has built over 15+ years is what the industry now calls an Integrative Medical Wellness model, and very few clinics in the world execute it at this level. The approach is rooted in the work of Dr. Michio Kushi's macrobiotic science, but has since evolved to incorporate genomic testing, epigenetic age assessments, hormonal profiling, and advanced biomarker panels that rival those found in dedicated longevity clinics in Switzerland or the US, but at a fraction of the cost and with the added benefit of a resort setting.
SHA's diagnostic circuit, which serves as the gateway to any personalised programme, typically includes biometric analysis, body composition scanning (DEXA or InBody), heart rate variability (HRV) measurement, and blood and microbiome panels. The outputs are reviewed by a multi-specialist team who then construct an individualised protocol. This is not wellness as a passive experience; it is structured, measurable, and designed to deliver outcomes you can track. For guests interested in longevity benchmarking, SHA is one of the few destinations in Europe where you can establish a genuine health baseline and return year-on-year to measure progress.
The Facilities
Although guests' agendas will undoubtedly be jam-packed with consultations, gorgeous treatments and intriguing group classes, having now experienced SHA's beautiful facilities I would absolutely make sure that there is some down time squeezed into your schedule. I spent my free time exploring the lovely spa with its selection of water jets in the various pools, and of course the classics: sauna, steam room, tepidarium (a posh, warm Roman-type of bathroom), and ice fountain. The summer months are the best time to enjoy the panoramic rooftop area, which is home to the restaurant, whirlpool and infinity pool, and to several secluded spots, where I managed to curl up with my book.
Expert Insight: SHA's hydrotherapy circuit deserves special mention from a therapeutic standpoint. The combination of contrast hydrotherapy (alternating hot and cold water exposure), the tepidarium, and the ice fountain is not merely relaxing, it is clinically meaningful. Regular contrast therapy has been shown to enhance lymphatic drainage, reduce systemic inflammation, and accelerate muscle recovery, making it an ideal daily complement to more intensive treatment programmes. The rooftop infinity pool, with its panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra Helada coastline, also serves as a natural mindfulness anchor, the kind of space that encourages genuine disconnection from digital life. SHA's facilities were expanded and upgraded as part of a major renovation project, and the result is a seamlessly integrated environment where the line between clinical and resort experience is expertly blurred.
The Activities
I have found group activities at some wellness properties to be few and far between (aqua aerobics once per week, the odd stretching class now and then), but the offerings at SHA are on a different level. There always seemed to be something happening, and my only issue was trying to move things around in my schedule so that I could join in the group fun. There was an entertaining variety of group classes available, including Yoga, Pilates, Nordic Walk, Total Body Condition and Mindfulness, as well as my favourite: the early morning walk to the lighthouse which came with breathtaking views of the sea. One of the most important aspects of any wellness stay for me is knowing how to continue the healing journey once you return home, and this is an area in which SHA excel. Perhaps not as 'sexy' as some of the group classes on offer, I nevertheless found the daily cooking class and the lectures given on gut health, longevity and healthy diet to be equally as valuable in making sure that I kept the 'good going' once I got back home.
Expert Insight: SHA's activity programming reflects a sophisticated understanding of behavioural health change, the science of how people actually adopt and sustain new habits after a retreat. The group classes are curated not just for their immediate physiological benefit (the morning Nordic walk delivers cardiovascular activation, proprioceptive training, and mood-enhancing serotonin release in one session), but for their long-term educational impact. The cooking classes and nutritional lectures are particularly noteworthy: SHA's kitchen team teaches guests to replicate the clinic's macrobiotic-Mediterranean approach at home, using accessible ingredients. Research consistently shows that experiential learning, cooking together, tasting, understanding the "why" behind each ingredient, is significantly more effective at driving lasting dietary change than leaflets or consultations alone. This commitment to post-retreat continuity is one of the key differentiators that separates SHA from resorts where healthy habits last only as long as the holiday itself.
The Treatments
Top notch. I can honestly say that my Deep Tissue Massage was one of the best I have had for years. The sheer variety of treatments available at SHA was what surprised me most. The offerings on their spa menu ranged from Sound Therapy with Tibetan Bowls to the signature Hydrogenetic Detox Cure, and from Personal Training sessions with skilled experts to Acupuncture and Cryotherapy. My programme of treatments had been carefully selected to address every aspect of my health, and the whole thing was beautifully curated and managed by the team of Agenda Planners, who were always available and happy to help me fine-tune my schedule.
Expert Insight: SHA's treatment menu spans over 200 therapies across six therapeutic disciplines: Macrobiotic Nutrition, Naturopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mind and Body, Advanced Medicine, and Aesthetics and Wellbeing. What elevates it beyond a typical spa menu is the clinical intent behind each selection. SHA's signature Hydrogenetic Detox Cure combines hydrogen-rich water therapy with specific dietary protocols, a modality backed by emerging research in oxidative stress reduction and cellular regeneration. Similarly, their Cryotherapy chamber (whole-body cryotherapy at -110 degrees Celsius) is used not just for recovery but as part of specific metabolic and anti-inflammatory protocols prescribed by the medical team.
The Agenda Planner system, where a dedicated specialist manages the choreography of medical consultations, treatments, classes, and meals, is genuinely unique to SHA at this scale. In practice, it means guests never experience the frustration of scheduling conflicts or underutilised time, and the programme flows with a coherence that makes the difference between a collection of nice treatments and a truly transformative health experience.
The Therapists
Every therapist and Doctor I encountered, without exception, excelled in their fields. I had long heard great things about Dr Bruno Ribeiro, who heads up SHA's Cognitive Development Unit, and my time with him did not disappoint. Special shout-outs must also go to Dr Amyad Raduan, and to Martin, who was responsible for the aforementioned Deep Tissue Massage.
Expert Insight: SHA recruits and retains talent at a level that is unusual even among five-star medical wellness destinations. Dr Bruno Ribeiro's Cognitive Development Unit, one of SHA's more distinctive offerings, applies neuroscience and positive psychology frameworks to help guests identify and address the root cognitive and emotional patterns behind stress, burnout, and lifestyle disease. It's a dimension that many purely physical programmes miss entirely. The clinical team is led by a Medical Director and supported by a multidisciplinary board of specialists, meaning that complex cases, guests arriving with chronic conditions, hormonal imbalances, or autoimmune issues, are handled with the same rigour you would expect from a private hospital, but in an environment that feels nothing like one.
The Food
I had sky-high expectations of the food at SHA and I was not disappointed. Meals are an absolute treat. There are different wellness menus available depending on your health goals and personal requirements (some much stricter than others), and yet whichever meal plan you are on you get to taste sophisticated, delicious food that is never, ever boring. The cuisine blends Oriental and Mediterranean dishes prepared with the best, freshest local ingredients for a balancing and alkalinizing diet. Spa cuisine does not have to mean deprivation, I never once felt hungry at SHA nor in need of anything further to eat.
Expert Insight: SHA's culinary philosophy is one of the most coherent and evidence-based in the luxury wellness sector. The macrobiotic principles underpinning the menus, emphasising whole grains, seasonal vegetables, fermented foods, and minimal animal protein, align closely with current longevity nutrition research, including the dietary patterns observed in the world's Blue Zones. SHA employs a dedicated team of wellness chefs trained in both macrobiotics and classical cuisine, which is why the food never feels medicinal. The alkalinising diet concept, reducing acid-forming foods (refined sugars, processed meats, alcohol) in favour of alkaline-forming plant foods, supports digestive health and metabolic efficiency, and is calibrated to each guest's specific health programme. Guests on detox programmes will receive a stricter menu, while those on general wellness plans enjoy a broader palette. SHA also serves meals at prescribed times aligned with the body's natural circadian rhythm, a detail that supports both digestion and sleep quality, and one that most resorts don't bother to implement.
The Verdict
Everything at SHA reflects an extraordinary attention to detail: the luxurious car waiting for me at Alicante airport stocked with SHA-branded water; the spa staff who were always aware of exactly where I was supposed to go for my next appointment; and the waiters who delivered my prescribed food to my table, and who knew exactly which type of herbal tea I had been recommended to take by the nutritionist. I was really impressed by the overall efficiency of SHA's organisation and how smoothly different departments cooperated, with me at the centre of everything. SHA have a 5-star grading for a good reason, the highest standards and quality are reflected in so many aspects, from the food and the treatments, to the gorgeous restyled accommodation. Before I left SHA I already knew that I would follow in the steps of so many other guests, and would one day return again to this exceptional spot.
Frequently Asked Questions About SHA Spain
1. Who is SHA Spain best suited for?
SHA is ideal for health-conscious travellers who want more than a standard spa break. It suits people looking for preventive health diagnostics, longevity programmes, burnout recovery, weight management, or simply a structured reset underpinned by real medicine. It is equally popular with solo travellers and couples, and attracts guests ranging from their mid-30s to their 70s. Those with specific health concerns, hormonal imbalances, metabolic issues, chronic fatigue, or high-stress lifestyles, will particularly benefit from SHA's medical expertise.
2. How long should I plan to stay at SHA Spain?
SHA recommends a minimum of 7 nights to begin experiencing meaningful results from a health programme. For deeper interventions, such as a comprehensive longevity assessment, detox protocol, or stress management programme, stays of 10 to 14 nights are ideal. Shorter stays of 3 to 5 nights are available and can be a valuable introduction, though the full diagnostic-to-protocol cycle is best experienced over a longer period.
3. What happens during the first day at SHA?
Your programme begins with a comprehensive medical intake, typically including a consultation with the head physician, biometric and body composition analysis, and an initial nutritional assessment. Based on these results, your personal Agenda Planner builds your bespoke schedule for the duration of your stay, including medical consultations, treatments, group activities, and meals. The process is thorough but never overwhelming.
4. Is SHA Spain purely focused on medical treatments, or can I just relax?
Both. SHA is structured enough for guests who want a rigorous health programme, and relaxed enough for those who simply want to decompress. Guests can choose the intensity of their experience, from a full medical wellness programme to a lighter wellness holiday approach that prioritises spa treatments, fitness classes, and restorative nutrition. The rooftop pool, spa circuit, and stunning coastal setting mean there is plenty of space to simply breathe and be.
5. Are SHA Spain's wellness programmes suitable for people with pre-existing medical conditions?
Yes, and in fact SHA's medical team is particularly well-equipped to handle complex health histories. Guests are encouraged to share full medical records in advance so that the clinical team can tailor programmes appropriately. SHA has specialists in endocrinology, cardiology, oncology support, autoimmune conditions, and mental health, making it one of the few wellness destinations where guests with serious health considerations can feel genuinely safe and supported.
6. What does a typical day look like at SHA Spain?
A typical day at SHA begins with an early morning activity, a sunrise walk to the lighthouse, yoga, or a mindfulness session. Breakfast follows, served at your allotted table with your personalised wellness menu. The morning is usually structured around medical consultations or diagnostic appointments, followed by a treatment in the afternoon (massage, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, etc.). Group classes and evening lectures on nutrition or longevity fill any remaining free time. There are moments of genuine rest built in, especially around the rooftop area, and the rhythm quickly feels natural.
7. How does SHA Spain compare to other European medical wellness destinations?
SHA is frequently benchmarked against clinics such as Clinique La Prairie (Switzerland), Mayr Health (Austria), and Lanserhof (Germany). What sets SHA apart is its macrobiotic-Mediterranean culinary foundation, its exceptionally warm and human-centred culture (very different from the clinical austerity of some Alpine equivalents), its outstanding value relative to Swiss competitors, and its growing strength in cognitive health and longevity science. The Spanish climate and setting are also a significant draw, particularly for UK and Northern European guests seeking sunshine alongside their health reset.
