Three Ways To Overcome Re-Entry Anxiety

11/05/2021, Malminder Gill, Hypnotherapist

After living in loungewear and getting used to a quiet home life, coming out of lockdown can feel really overwhelming. This is now a big concern for many people and has been termed ‘re-entry anxiety’.

What Re-Entry Anxiety Looks Like

  • Worrying about crowded spaces
  • Feeling upset about your appearance
  • Worrying that people are judging you
  • Feeling uncomfortable with change
  • Wanting to stay in lockdown
  • Not wanting to engage in social situations
  • Feeling like you have nothing to say at meet-ups
  • Anxiety dreams/nightmares
  • Worrying about holidays or fear of missing out
  • Stressing about the things you have to do differently.

How To Overcome Re-Entry Anxiety

Reflect

If something makes you feel anxious or uneasy, it can really help dig down and uncover what makes you feel uncomfortable. These journal prompts can help;

  • What emotion am I feeling right now?
  • What is causing me to feel this way?
  • Is there anything that feels difficult right now but that I know feels good/that I used to enjoy?
  • What did I stick at today, even though it felt hard?
  • What is important to me?
  • Is there anything that feels uncomfortable to me but is important for others?

Reflecting on your discomfort and celebrating the little and big wins can reframe your anxiety and make it feel more manageable.

Take It Slow And Small

Peer pressure may be forcing you to cram your diary with lots of events. However, this can mean you lose that connection with yourself. Now can be a great time to reinstate any boundaries that protect your time and support your mental health. For each event, think carefully about whether you truly want to go and what it will give you. Don’t be afraid to decline invites.

If you do find yourself becoming overwhelmed with events, take some time out in nature to tune back into yourself and work out what you really want moving forward.

Reboot Your Energy

Repeating the same routine day in, day out can feel really draining. Not having a chance to unwind, have a break or holiday or do the things that revitalise you can mean you feel more fatigued than normal.  To increase your resilience and prevent re-entry anxiety, having things that you really look forward to and that give your whole self a reboot can be crucial.

So ask yourself;

  • How can I make time for myself today?
  • What’s the one thing I can do today that increases my energy?
  • What can I plan and look forward to?
  • Are there any energy drains that I can remove from my life right now?
